The Guide & the Author

This guide was born from a simple observation: most interview advice online is generic. "Be yourself." "Research the program." None of it tells you what to actually say when the question lands — and none of it understands ophthalmology, with its own match, its own timeline, and its own interview culture.

Dr. Eye MD interviewed across ophthalmology, internal medicine, and transitional-year programs — 20+ residency interviews in total, in the specialty he now practices. Along the way he built a playbook: a repeatable structure for every ophthalmology-specific question, tested live, refined after each interview day. That playbook became this guide.

What is inside the guide

  • Specialty-specific question frameworks — "Why ophthalmology?", "Tell me about yourself," "Why our program?", ethics scenarios, the interesting-case question, and more, each with the author's detailed sample answer showing the structure in action.
  • The microsurgery chapters — how to talk about surgery honestly as a medical student, and how programs really read your surgical temperament.
  • The SF Match playbook — the timeline, informal signaling, and how the early cadence changes your strategy.
  • The strategy sections — away rotations and letters, thirty questions to ask programs, red flags to watch for, rank-list strategy, and a 48-hour rapid-fire prep checklist.

How to use it

Read each question once for the framework, then draft your own answer using the same structure. Do not memorize the sample answers word for word — interviewers can spot a scripted response. Borrow the structure and fill it with your own stories. That is the whole method: genuineness, delivered with structure.

About Dr. Eye MD

Ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, former chief resident

Dr. Eye MD is an ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, a former chief resident at NYU Langone, a Duke alum, and a Cleveland Clinic-trained attending physician. He went through 20+ residency interviews himself and has since helped 800+ applicants prepare theirs. His philosophy is the cliché that happens to be true: try to be as genuine as possible — and give that genuineness a framework so it lands under pressure.
